I went through the emoji character set on my laptop, and noted each character that appears in M's message, and the name for it that's in the character set keyboard. This list is in the order each icon appears in the message, followed by how many times it appears. If there's no number, the character only appears once. I don't know what it means, but perhaps someone else can figure it out. ---------------------------------------------------

The spreadsheet is ready. You can find it here. I've made it so people can leave comments but not edit (I'm just worried about a 'too many cooks in the kitchen' scenario if I allow anyone with the link to edit the spreadsheet). So if you want to make suggestions, please leave a comment on the spreadsheet or leave your thoughts here on the message board! Some of my word associations might be a little silly, I know, so feel free to suggest what an emoji means to you. I couldn't figure out how to comment on the beautiful spreadsheet you made, so I'll just post here... -Pineapples are traditionally a symbol of hospitality www.mindspring.com/~sixcatpack/pineappl.htm-Besides indicating gender, the restroom icon might be a symbol of "relief"? -The trident emblem suggests Poseidon and Neptune to me. -Those Japanese carp koinobori windsock/kites are used to celebrate Children's Day (formerly just called Boys' Day), which takes place on the fifth of May (5/5) every year. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children's_Day_(Japan)

Since the Key is an iPod Touch, I was thinking that perhaps there's something to the pattern that is not evident in the way it's formatted via the messages app.
It's sort of painstaking to reproduce the characters, but I'm using notes (since that would be present on a vanilla factory iPod) to do so where the formatting and natural word wrap allows for 13 characters wide in the normal orientation. As that's about the width of the screen itself, if this formatting thought is worth pursuing, that may be considered the maximum width, unless we rotate to landscape in which case it would be 25 emoji wide.
That actually sounds like a nice number to square. If there are 625 emoji (I haven't counted) that'd be perfect to then make a square picture with each emoji as a pixel to then explore that suggested possibility - the long linear "picture" posted above doesn't do anything for me except for a suggestion of a "2" and a "5" though I think that's just a natural consequence of the shape of the image.
It would be nice to know what other apps may have been present on the iPod that could be used for emoji input that perhaps could alter the size/appearance.

I'll add them to the word association column of the spreadsheet.

This is a good point, which is partly why I'm still thinking the number of times an emoji repeats and the sequence of emoji in the message (imagining no line breaks) is the most important factor, rather than the number of emoji on a line or anything like that. But I did some further math based on this: I believe there are 1210 emoji total (this is counting every single one: 151 rows of 8 and one row of 2 (at least that made the math easy!))). If we don't want to count every emoji, just how many different ones there are, there are 138.

Correction to my previous numbers: I was using iOS 7. But the message would have been composed and received on an iOS 6 device. Notes on iOS 6 on an iPhone or iPod only allows 12 emoji per line in portrait orientation and 20 in landscape. On an ipad mini, you get 31 in portrait and only 26 in landscape (due to the slide-in folder flap listing of all notes). Of note, the largest number of emoji you could display at one time would be 31x38 = 1178 (close, but for this line of reasoning to seem more worthwhile I'd expect it to be exact). If I remember correctly, the iPad would display exactly the same, just larger. The pic has the divisors and factors of 1210. None of these match up with any width listed above. I think I'm going to privately try to get the message sent to me for manipulation instead of trying to recreate it. Attachments:

I have a feeling this is going to come into play here whether it's the right direction or not. I haven't downloaded the app, but I doubt it's able to reverse from emoji to picture unless it's on the device the picture was originally used in. I just need a full dupe of the original message. No luck asking sfmola for a copy. I'm not sure if my question went through, I'm not totally familiar with tumblr. So, I'm still working on recreating it myself. We'll need to find the parameters for an appropriate looking image size. Looking at the divisors for 1210, I'd imagine it's going to be 22x55, but that doesn't fit a ratio for any iOS device screen aspect. I guess when I finally have it, I'll put it in a window on the computer with word wrap on and dynamically resize it until something pops. Or not. Anyway, I'll keep you updated. Attachments:

I've also been wondering if there could be something interesting in the position of each emoji in the apple keyboard.
Like, the huge grin face would be on the face tab, on the second set of characters, in column 2 and row 2. (or wherever it actually is - I am not very iOS savvy).

Is it possible that the holes on the coins have anything to do with the emojis? the holes have dots on them indicating some form of order, so just maybe the coin lined with each the message will give us something.

Interesting. Some of them show, most of them don't.
Well, if anyone wants a copy to tinker with, private message me here with a way to get it to you - email or SMS.
