i figure i'll just throw a bunch of our ideas in here for now - get them somewhat central. i'll try to give credit where it's due, but forgive me if i miss anyone/anything (i know there's a lot more) or mix something up. for now i think i'll focus on the "corner, hole, name, news" lines (one of them might be correct, but we need to follow it a different way after).
<cvxn> I wonder if Discovery's "first" name refers to when people exclaim "first!" which in Greek is of course, "Eureka".
There's the ghost town of Eureka, Arizona, and if you follow the directions from the compass as written - North, East, West & South (NEWS) - you can pretty much get there from the LoC.
I'm stretching, I know.
and I wonder if "breath" is one of those words like "hole" that is one M is using to be a little abstract. Maybe it will come up again in the future. I feel like we should start a Lexicon of M's Terminology on the Forum
which smoothly transitions to passcrow:
Mind(Heed? Actual Mind? Look at? Knowledge?)
her(
Lost Girl? Discovery
? Some other female?)
corner(Quadrant? Room corner? Corner of the mural? Street corner? General corner of the LoC? )
and through(Actually through? Through, like 'through this we learn that?)
that(the corner?)
hole(Actual hole? Door? Stairwell? Metaphorical hole? Gap? Window? Tunnel?)
go(Physically? Mentally?).
Her(Discovery
? Lost Girl? Unknown her?)
first(Numerically? First listed? Discovery? Lost?)
name follows(Physically? Surveillance? Imitate? Keep to? Understand?)
news(Actual news? Information? Directions? The word news?)
you must know.(We know it already? We have to know it to proceed?)
[editor's note: it seems we did get confirmation from ls(?) that "her" refers to the same "discovery" in both instances]
Mind her corner and through that hole go= SW corner, Hole in the medallion roughly SW. onther side of the coin=est 1876.
and more ideas for corners/holes:
tyme: Mind her Corner and through that hole go --> turn to your right where the figure next to Discovery is pointing, go through the door.
Mind her Corner and through that hole go --> turn to your right (Square dance move, thanks Cherrybomb) and go through the door.
danagel/dan/dave/danve: Mind her corner and through that hole go = Go through the corner of the SW pavilion, through the courtyard (hole in building) into the Reading Room
Her first name follows (news you must know) - the word "Discovery" follows the word "Spain" in the circular dome ceiling.
OR Her first name follows (news you must know) - the word "Literature" follows "Discovery" in the circular dome ceiling.
Mind her corner and pass through to the mural on the West wall, "Conquest" (determined by compass, N-E-W-S you must know).
kaylen & tyme:
Take the tunnel SOUTH (Discovery is on the South Wall of the SW pavillion) to the Madison Memorial Building.
The Madison Building houses the Newspaper and Current Periodicals Reading Room (First Name Periodicals)
<jedpeter>/jed/joe/mr. j.e.d./joed? I minded her corner (SW) of the note…where the words "The door" are
I don't know what going through that hole would be, and whether the hole would even be the words "the door" or maybe the "d" or the "o". And I can't make the next line fit in. But then using the eleventh breath of the note - "spring" we have "door spring"? or door marked with a spring?
happyphantom: Mind her corner > she is located in the SW pavillion
Through that hole go > exit the building from the southwest side
cornchak still feels that the medallion will be used for this
and for good measure, i'm going to re-point out that it seems the discovery and civilization murals are reversed on one page of the loc website, which is possibly where the initial confusion between them started.
www.loc.gov/visit/tours/online-tours/southwest-pavilion.htmldiscovery
is the one with the globe, right?
i know i missed a ton of ideas. message or post and i'll add them in.
