A path was posted. The sum of the circled numbers was 119, which led to the Bible page of Kit 119. The numbers from the path were aligned in left and right columns. Similarly, the verse numbers from the Bible page are aligned in left and right columns, serving as a cipher. By way of example, 18 was the first LHS number of the path, and the number 6 was the 18th number on the LHS Bible page. Solving the cipher in this way led to a Minecraft server.
Inside the Minecraft game, things went somewhat awry when people didn't heed the warning ("don't pass the water"), but clues were found. A book containing a series of messages was recovered. "Bring to light those who hold eachother dear...." was the first part of this key. Finally, after many many clues, it was determined that the photos that were sent with alchemy kits were coded with invisible ink messages. Although there were redundant messages sent out into the Universe, only two messages came back (3 redundant messages plus 1 unique). To compensate for things being lost to the ether (people who received things kept their items in the dark), M used Minecraft to recover the missing messages and also provided a grid to the group. Eventually, a poem was deciphered:
city of fallen face
house where lifeless stir
consult the grand mother
begins with a trip
The letters in the message (including the "drop another coin...." sentence) coded to the Minecraft book pages, resulting in the following poem:
in place of a lost boy who hoped for the spring, our fair maidens stand in a ring
find the lost girl and follow her north, to where her father carried her forth
mind her corner and through that hole go
her first name follows, news you must know, that marked with the eleventh breath tells a tale
where the train took the son is the end of the trail
when you get there, look out at the words set in stone
the door will open, the third that is shown
And that's where we are. Solving this puzzle is the final path to the next key and the end of Chapter 1.
hattips to: bustedclutch for figuring out the Bible cipher went to a minecraft server, Kaylen Aldanae and jedpeter for Minecrafting, cornchak for deciphering both the invisible ink clues and the Minecraft book, enaxor for suggesting the Musee Mechanique, shaunasketches and princessperil for trekking all over SF in search of a grandmother to consult, ohhoe for finding the English version of the fortune beginning with "a trip," and everyone else who has been chiming in with great thoughts and humor over on the irc channel. webchat.freenode.net/?channels #findthestarlight

begins with a trip
- city of fallen face is San Francisco (as previously reasoned, based on the prologue photo)
- house where lifeless stir is the Musee Mecanique, because still dolls come to life.
- the grandmother is a fortune teller machine, who hands out fortune cards for 50 cents each consultation. She has in front of her a hand of tarot cards.
- begins with a trip is a card, on which the first words are, "A trip..." We found one using google.
